The Community Gardens program needed to refocus by returning the responsibility of the Crystal Palace gardens to The Town of Perth’s Business Improvement Association (BIA). In 2016, the BIA increased the gardens around the Crystal Palace and it was not possible for our volunteers to take on the additional workload. A letter was sent to the BIA setting out our challenges and costs involved in the care of the gardens. They understood and asked if any PDHS volunteers would be available to deadhead barrels and plants on an ongoing basis as an alternative. We hope to be able to support them in this task. Note, the BIA did make outstanding improvements to the gardens around Crystal Palace.

PDHS volunteers took on refurbishing and finding new perennials for the Wendy Laut Ribbon of Life Memorial Garden (as a Pollinator Garden) in the Last Duel Campground. This was done as a 2017 OHA initiative and at the request of the Town of Perth. PDHS agreed to set the garden up, weed, add pertinent perennials and then turn its care back to the Town for continued maintenance. Due to flooding in the Spring, we were slow in getting into the garden. When the area was dry, the clean-up began and a total of 24.5 hours was devoted to the garden. The Town noted they had not focused on it for over 4 years but we managed to bring back some semblance of order.

Eleven PDHS members worked 173 hours in four Town gardens – Cenotaph, Flag Garden, Museum and Wendy Laut Ribbon of Life Memorial Garden.

Our reliable, dependable and knowledgeable gardeners working this year were: David Archer, Judy Buehler, Sherry Burke, Richard Catchpaw, Muriel Hopper, Robin McIntosh, Ed Roberts, Elaine Scott, Lynn Whitestone, Janette Wood and Lynda Haddon (Co-Ordinator).

Thank you to these dedicated volunteers who take on the task each year of helping to keep the gardens spiffy. We could NOT do this without you!

PLANT SALE - MAY 19, 2018

The PDHS plant sale is a long running event held on the Saturday morning of the May holiday weekend (May 19, 2017 - 8:30 am to 10:00 am). Over the years it has moved from being a table in the parking lot beside the town library to its present location in the double gymnasium at Stewart School on Sunset Blvd.

The primary purpose of the sale is to raise funds for the running of the Society. As an added bonus, it also provides members with a chance to share their excess of plants as well as giving people the opportunity to endlessly renovate their gardens at bargain prices.

The majority of the plants are donated by members. The sale is staffed by volunteers from the Society. Judging from the line ups and the enthusiasm of the buyers, the sale is highly anticipated and a regular success!

For well over a decade, the PDHS has participated, along with many other local Perth businesses and stores, in decorating a Christmas tree at the Crystal Palace for the "Festival of Lights".
