Speakers: Sylvia van Oort, Sylvia's Plant Place, Perth.
Perth’s own Sylvia van Oort joins the Perth & District Horticultural Society at their next general meeting on Tuesday, April 10th to explain how to plan, plant and enjoy cut flowers from your own garden. Her presentation will include examples of easy-to-grow annuals, perennials and bulbs for three seasons of cutting.
Sylvia van Oort was born in B.C. to Dutch immigrant parents. In 1975 she moved to Holland where she lived for 9 years and met and married her husband Franc. She originally studied and practiced fashion design, but in 1995, after studying horticultural with Guelph University, made the big shift to plant and flower growing on their farm just west of Perth.
From an innocent few rows of flowers planted to help a friend, her business has grown to become Sylvia’s Plant Place with over 2 acres of cut flowers—annuals, perennials, and bulbs—in fields and 3 greenhouses. She and her team grow and arrange flowers for over 30 weddings a year and provide custom floral services to individuals, as well as providing bouquets and arrangements to many retail and wholesale customers in Perth and area. Sylvia is passionate about flowers, and passionate about using local flowers.
