The Perth & District Horticultural Society is affiliated with the Ontario Horticultural Association
Our society falls under District 2 of the OHA
We are a group of people from beginners to experienced gardeners and everywhere in between who enjoy gardens and gardening. We meet regularly to learn about what grows best in the Perth area and to share our knowledge about all aspects of gardening.
Our membership is 100+ strong and consists of several Master Gardeners of Lanark County. We also boast several accredited Flower Judges within our ranks. At our monthly meetings, we welcome knowledgeable speakers on a wide variety of topics to speak to our membership. These speakers provide slide shows, demonstrations, answer questions on many different topics from horticultural, ponds, flower arranging to enhance your home, benefits of herbs, getting the best from your own garden, to food and wine.
We are involved in promoting and teaching gardening in our Community and are particularly proud of our Junior Gardeners Program in many elementary schools. Over the years the PDHS has been responsible for the upkeep of several public gardens: the Flag Garden in the Perth Basin, the Cenotaph Garden in front of the hospital, the Museum Gardens, Wendy Laut Pollinator Garden and some gardens at Inge-Va..
PDHS has a hard working Board of Directors, each of whom heads different committees: community gardens, publicity, flower and photography shows, plant sales, social, volunteer, PDHS library, newsletter, website and yearbook. We also have a President, secretary and treasurer.
The PDHS is fortunate to have a devoted group of gardeners and volunteers. Amongst our members we can boast several Lanark Master Gardeners; accredited Flower Judges and many exceptional bakers who provide snacks for our general meetings! Altogether we comprise a great team of members who put in over 1300 volunteer hours this past year. PDHS volunteers enable us to pursue our gardening passion and help promote horticulture and youth education as well as beautifying our community.
Come, enjoy and grow with us!
We have adopted our emblem as the Showy Lady Slipper Orchid, which is indigenous to Lanark County. The Showy Lady Slipper Orchid blooms in profusion at the Purdon Conservation Area in the early spring and attracts many visitors to view its extensive display. |
